Abstract

This study examines the effect of the discovery learning model combined with ice breaking activities on students’ motivation and learning achievement at SMK Negeri 1 Warunggunung. The research was motivated by the low motivation and academic performance of students due to teacher-centered learning, which tends to make students passive. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed. The sample consisted of two classes of Grade X Freshwater Fisheries Agribusiness students, with X APAT 1 as the control group and X APAT 2 as the experimental group. Data were collected through tests (pretest-posttest) and non-tests such as questionnaires, observations, and documentation. Findings revealed that the experimental class achieved a motivation score of 82%, higher than the control class (75.5%). Moreover, the average posttest score of the experimental group (72.65) exceeded that of the control group (46.07). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant influence with a significance value of 0.002. Thus, discovery learning with ice breaking is proven to be effective in enhancing both students’ learning motivation and achievement.
