Abstract

This research was motivated by the increasingly diverse hijab styles among Generation Z female students as a result of fashion trends and social media influences. Consequently, the hijab is no longer understood merely as a religious obligation, but also as part of personal identity and lifestyle. This study aimed to examine the views, perceptions, and assessments of students of the Islamic Religious Education Study Program regarding the hijab styles of Generation Z female students at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi from the perspective of Islamic law. This study employed a field research design with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving 6 students from the PAI Study Program, who were selected purposively. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that: 1) Islamic Religious Education students viewed the hijab as a religious obligation that serves to cover the aurah, preserve honor, and maintain Muslim women’s identity, rather than merely functioning as a head covering; 2) they perceived that modern hijab trends among Generation Z were developing rapidly due to the influence of social media, with some students appreciating the creativity of hijab styles, while others remained critical of the tendency to follow trends without observing Islamic law; and 3) they assessed that some hijab styles worn by Generation Z female students were not yet fully in accordance with the provisions of Islamic law. Therefore, Islamic law remained the primary basis for assessing the appropriateness of a particular hijab style.
