Abstract

Religious traditions serve as a vital mechanism for instilling Islamic values within communities, yet they undergo significant transformation alongside technological advances and modern social shifts. This study aims to analyze the process of internalizing Islamic values through religious traditions in Bumiharjo Village, describe the meanings and functions of these traditions as media for value internalization, examine shifts in religious practices regarding form, intensity, and participation, and explore intergenerational differences between older and younger cohorts. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach to capture religious practices from an emic perspective, data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Findings reveal that religious traditions such as pengajian, yasinan, and tahlilan remain primary channels for internalizing Islamic values through habituation, social interaction, and shared collective experiences. However, religious practices exhibit noticeable shifts, characterized by evolving forms, varying levels of engagement, and changing interpretations, particularly among the youth who favor greater flexibility and individualism. This study contributes to the sociology of religion by demonstrating that religious traditions act as dynamic media that sustain the continuity of Islamic values amidst ongoing social change.
