Abstract

The pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה, YHWH) is one of the most debated philological and theological issues in Old Testament studies. The loss of the pronunciation tradition stemming from Jewish reverence for the Divine Name has led to various proposed reconstructions, ranging from "Yahweh" and "Jehovah" to other hypotheses based on textual and linguistic evidence. This study aims to reconstruct the pronunciation of YHWH by employing philology, textual criticism, historical linguistics, and Old Testament exegesis, analyzing four primary categories of evidence: the Masoretic tradition, ancient Greek transliterations, Qumran manuscripts, and modern Hebrew linguistic studies. The research utilizes a qualitative-descriptive method based on a review of primary sources and contemporary academic literature. The findings indicate that the form "Yahweh" enjoys stronger philological support than "Jehovah" the latter having emerged from the combination of the Tetragrammaton’s consonants with the vowels of the word Adonai within the Masoretic tradition. Although absolute certainty regarding the original pronunciation is unattainable, a synthesis of the evidence suggests that the reconstruction "Yahweh" is the most academically defensible form.
