Abstract

The fan broom home industry in Jabalsari Village, Sumbergempol District, Tulungagung Regency, experiences production constraints in the fibre combing and straightening process, which is still conducted manually using simple and non-ergonomic tools. At Sapu Kipas Pak Slamet, a craftsmen group of fourteen members, this stage became the main production bottleneck due to long processing time, high physical workload, and inconsistent product quality. The lack of written work standards and production records also hindered performance evaluation. This community service programme aimed to improve production efficiency and productivity through the application of an appropriate-technology fibre combing and straightening machine and basic production management improvement. A participatory needs-based approach was applied through socialisation, baseline mapping, technology implementation, operator training, mentoring, evaluation, and sustainability planning. The developed machine, equipped with a single-phase electric motor, spiked combing rollers, worm-gear reducer, belt-pulley transmission, bearings, electrical panel, and safety covers, was fabricated, tested, installed, and operated independently by the partner. The programme also delivered three standard operating procedures, one training module, and two production recording forms. Production improvements are being monitored through daily records due to the absence of previous baseline data.
