Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of mother-child attachment, the level of independence of children aged 5-6 years, and the relationship between the two variables among students attending a full day kindergarten program at TK Al Azhar, Tasikmalaya. A quantitative correlational approach was used, involving 47 respondents selected through a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected using a mother-child attachment scale filled in by mothers and a child independence scale filled in by classroom teachers, both developed on a Likert scale. Since the prerequisite tests indicated that the data were not normally distributed, the hypothesis was tested using Spearman's Rho nonparametric correlation. The results showed that mother-child attachment was generally in the moderate category (mean = 48.77), while children's independence was also in the moderate category (mean = 86.60). The correlation analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between mother-child attachment and children's independence (rs = -0.371; p = 0.010), with a coefficient of determination of 13.76%, indicating a weak relationship. These findings suggest that children's independence in a full day school setting is shaped not only by the quality of maternal attachment but also by school habituation, teacher guidance, peer interaction, and individual characteristics.
