Abstract

This study aims to improve safety and efficiency in aircraft landing gear maintenance at the Aviation Facilities Calibration Center (BBKFP). BBKFP currently lacks a landing gear stand, which increases the risk of workplace accidents and component damage during the removal, inspection, and installation processes. This research designs a landing gear stand for the King Air B350i aircraft using the VDI 2221 method, which consists of four stages: clarification of task, conceptual design, embodiment design, and detailed design. The design process was based on field observations and discussions with BBKFP personnel to determine user requirements. The tool was designed to support a load of up to 157.5 kg (safety factor 1.5), be operable by one person, have a vertical lifting mechanism, and use strong yet easily obtainable materials. The selected design features a “U”-shaped cross-section with a 2-ton hydraulic jack lifting system and pin-lock safety mechanism. The main material, SS400 steel, has a yield strength of 245 MPa. Structural analysis showed that all stresses were below the allowable limit of 61.25 MPa, with a maximum stress of 3.32 MPa. The stand is equipped with four caster wheels (350 kg capacity each) and a base frame of 1000 × 1000 × 40 mm. Functional testing confirmed the tool’s safety, stability, efficiency, and suitability for BBKFP’s operational needs.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to improve work effectiveness and safety in Non-Destructive Test (NDT) Radiography inspections on the Beechcraft Hawker 900XP aircraft at the Balai Besar Kalibrasi Fasilitas Penerbangan (BBKFP). Field observations showed that the Huatec XXG-3005 X-Ray device lacked a stable and safe stand, requiring manual placement using a sling crane or temporary supports. This condition caused potential accidents, low X-ray beam accuracy toward the aircraft wings, and delays in NDT operations. Therefore, this study designed an X-Ray stand compatible with the Crane Master FC2000 to support and stabilize the device accurately and safely according to NDT standards such as Source to Film Distance (SFD). The research used the systematic VDI 2221 approach, including task clarification, concept design, form design, and detailed design. The selected design features a 360° circular rail system, a semi-cylindrical load holder with iron straps, and pin locks at eight rotation points. Technical analysis using SolidWorks and manual calculations with ASTM 500B material showed the structure can withstand a 1648 N static load with a safety factor of 4, below the allowable stress limit. Functional testing at BBKFP confirmed the stand maintains X-Ray stability and enhances safety. The design meets technical and safety standards, improving efficiency in NDT Radiography operations at AMO 145 BBKFP.
