Abstract

The Battery component on the Airbus 320 plays an important role in the aircraft’s electrical system, especially when the aircraft is on the ground, during the start process of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), and in emergency conditions. Battery P/N 2758 is categorized as a NO GO item, meaning that if it fails, the aircraft is not permitted to fly. This component is a hard time component with a specific service life limit. Based on PT XYZ data, there were 184 cases of component removal within one year, indicating a high failure frequency before the end of its service life, which increases maintenance costs and disrupts flight schedules. This study analyzes the causes of Battery P/N 2758 failures and determines maintenance strategies using the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) method with Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) approaches. The FMEA results identify four failure modes: Low Voltage, Battery Weak, Battery Drop, and Low Insulation, with Low Voltage having the highest RPN value of 192. FTA identifies three main causes: human error, improper work procedures, and environmental conditions. The recommended RCM strategies include Scheduled On-Condition Task and Failure Finding Task, with preventive actions such as voltage inspection, cleanliness maintenance, and proper storage temperature. This approach effectively minimizes failures by improving procedural discipline and regular inspections.

Abstract

The MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) industry in Indonesia still faces challenges in efficiency, productivity, and global competitiveness, especially against international companies with more advanced technology. PT XYZ, as one of the largest MROs, continues to innovate and optimize aircraft maintenance processes to reduce manhours deviation and achieve Turn Around Time (TAT) targets in line with customer commitments. Uncontrolled increases in manhours lead to higher manhours cost and lower profitability. Form Analysis Profitability Maintenance (FAPM) is used to plan maintenance project profits, where manhours cost is the largest fixed cost. Of 36 C-Check Airbus A330 maintenances conducted between 2022–2024, only nine achieved the FAPM target. This study applies Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to analyze process flow and identify non value added activities. The results show the largest deviation occurred during the inspection phase, particularly in request for material (347.4 manhours) and request for tools and equipment (295.025 manhours), categorized as waste of waiting. Through Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the 5 Why method, the main causes were data input errors, limited safety stock, suboptimal warehouse layout, and few vendors. Solutions using the 5W+1H approach are expected to reduce deviations, lower costs, and enhance company profitability.
