Abstract

Acute respiratory infections remain one of the leading causes of morbidity among children under five, particularly in areas where environmental risk factors such as household cigarette smoke persist. This study aimed to examine the relationship between household cigarette smoke exposure and the incidence of respiratory infections in children. A cross-sectional quantitative design was used, involving 30 children aged 0–5 years who visited Tepeleo Health Center, Central Halmahera, between January and March 2025. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using contingency coefficient testing to determine the strength of association between smoke exposure and infection occurrence. The results show that 40% of children live in households where smoking occurs indoors, and among these, most present with symptoms of respiratory illness, including influenza, pharyngitis, and the common cold. The analysis reveals a strong association between exposure to cigarette smoke and the incidence of respiratory infections, with a contingency coefficient value of 0.651 and a p-value of 0.000. Children in smoking households tend to develop infections more frequently than those in smoke-free environments. The findings confirm that cigarette smoke is a prominent preventable factor contributing to poor respiratory health in children. The study highlights the urgent need for family-based education and the implementation of smoke-free home policies as practical measures to reduce respiratory disease risk. Promoting awareness and behavior change among caregivers plays a vital role in ensuring a healthy indoor environment for child development.

Abstract

Maternal age during pregnancy is one of the factors influencing a child's developmental process, particularly in the emotional domain. Pregnancy occurring at a young age often correlates with psychological unpreparedness for parenting roles, which may affect a child's emotional stability. This study aims to identify the relationship between early maternal age at pregnancy and the emotional development of children aged 3–5 years in the working area of the Public Health Center in Jailolo District, West Halmahera Regency. A quantitative approach was employed using a cross-sectional design, involving 40 mothers as respondents. Data were analyzed using Kendall’s Tau-b test. The findings indicate that 55% of respondents experienced pregnancy before the age of 20, and 32.5% of children exhibited signs of emotional instability. A statistically significant relationship was found between maternal age at pregnancy and the emotional development of children (τ = 0.413; p = 0.010). Mothers who experienced pregnancy at a more mature age were more likely to have children with better emotional stability. These findings underscore the importance of providing support for young mothers and parenting education during pregnancy to promote optimal emotional development in children.

Abstract

Anemia during the second trimester of pregnancy is a common hematological disorder that may affect both maternal and fetal health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between adherence to iron tablet consumption and the incidence of anemia among second-trimester pregnant women. A cross-sectional design was applied with a total of 45 participants. Data were collected through structured interviews and hemoglobin documentation from maternal health records. Adherence was classified as high, moderate, or low, and anemia was categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. The results showed that 60% of respondents demonstrated high adherence, and the same proportion experienced mild anemia. Spearman Rank test revealed a very strong relationship between adherence and anemia (r = –0.875; p = 0.000). The findings indicate that higher adherence correlates with lower anemia severity. The success of iron supplementation programs depends on consistent behavior, health worker support, and family involvement. This study is limited in geographical scope and sample size, warranting cautious interpretation. Future research should explore behavioral, nutritional, and social determinants more comprehensively.

Abstract

Child growth is a key indicator of health and well-being in early life. One of the influencing factors is the history of basic immunization. Basic immunization serves as a preventive measure against infectious diseases that may interfere with a child’s physical development. This study aimed to determine the relationship between basic immunization history and the growth status of infants aged 9–24 months at PMB Wiwik Indriani, Sungai Ulin. The study used a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach and involved 35 infants selected through total sampling. Data were obtained from immunization records and anthropometric measurements, including weight, height, and upper arm circumference. Analysis using the Spearman Rank correlation test showed a strong positive relationship between immunization history and infant growth status (r = 0.615; p = 0.000). Infants who had completed basic immunization tended to show better growth outcomes. These findings support the importance of complete immunization as a promotive strategy to enhance optimal growth in early childhood.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy remains a prevalent health issue with adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus. This study aims to examine the relationship between maternal nutritional status and the incidence of anemia during pregnancy. A cross-sectional design was applied involving 40 pregnant women as respondents. Nutritional status was assessed through anthropometric measures, and hemoglobin levels were recorded from maternal health records. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation. The findings show that most respondents had fair to poor nutritional status, and all experienced anemia, with a predominance of moderate to severe levels. The correlation test revealed a very strong relationship between nutritional status and anemia (r = 0.916; p = 0.000). These results indicate that inadequate nutritional status strongly correlates with higher anemia severity. A monotonous diet, low in animal protein and vegetables, and limited nutrition knowledge contribute substantially to this condition. Furthermore, household decision-making around food often excludes the pregnant mother. Prevention strategies should emphasize nutrition education and behavioral change, rather than relying solely on supplementation. Health services should also involve families in sustaining healthy dietary practices during pregnancy.
