Abstract

The growing prominence of Islamic da’wah in digital spaces has increased public exposure to diverse interpretations of the Qur'an, yet academic studies remain largely focused on theoretical aspects of tafsīr rather than their practical application in contemporary preaching. This study aims to comparatively analyze how the Ishārī and ‘Ilmī approaches to Qur'anic interpretation are implemented in the da’wah of Ustadz Hanan Attaki and Ustadz Adi Hidayat, and to identify the distinctive characteristics emerging from the application of these two approaches. The methodology employs a qualitative approach based on library research with a descriptive-comparative analytical design, utilizing content analysis techniques on selected da’wah materials uploaded on digital platforms, particularly YouTube, supplemented by secondary data from books, journals, and relevant articles. The findings reveal that Attaki consistently applies Ishārī tafsīr emphasizing inner meaning, spiritual reflection, moral transformation, and emotional resonance, as evident in his interpretation of hijrah as an inner journey and khusyu’ as heartfelt presence before God. Conversely, Adi Hidayat employs ‘Ilmī tafsīr prioritizing linguistic analysis, rational argumentation, empirical verification, and correlation with modern scientific discoveries, such as his embryological interpretation of Qur'an. 23:12-14. Both approaches prove to be complementary rather than contradictory, each addressing the distinct spiritual and intellectual needs of diverse audiences in the digital era. This study contributes theoretically by demonstrating that the dichotomy between spiritual and rational interpretation is increasingly obsolete in modern Muslim societies, while practically offering an integrative model for contemporary da’wah that combines spiritual depth and intellectual rigor. Future research is recommended to empirically investigate how audiences synthesize these complementary messages in their daily religious practices.
