Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common health problem characterized by an increase in the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and bacteria in urine sediment. The accuracy of urine tests is greatly influenced by specimen handling, particularly sedimentation time, so delays in testing can potentially affect laboratory results and lead to misdiagnosis. This study aims to analyze the effect of sedimentation delay on the results of leukocyte, erythrocyte, and bacterial tests in the urine of patients with suspected UTI. The study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in the laboratory of Buleleng Regional General Hospital. A total of 30 urine samples from patients suspected of having UTI were examined immediately after collection, after a 30-minute delay, and after a 60-minute delay. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test to assess the differences in results between examination times. The results showed that delays of up to 60 minutes did not significantly affect the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, or bacteria in the urine sediment. These findings confirm that although immediate examination remains the standard, delays of up to one hour are acceptable without compromising the quality of laboratory results. Therefore, urine specimens need to be managed appropriately to ensure diagnostic accuracy, and laboratory policies need to take into account operational conditions in the care of patients with suspected UTI.

Abstract

Urine sediment examination supports the diagnosis and monitoring of kidney and urinary tract disorders. One pre-analytical factor that can potentially affect the accuracy of urine sediment examination results is variation in urine specimen volume. This study aims to analyze the effect of urine volume variation on crystal findings in urine sediment examination. This study used an experimental design with 30 urine specimens from patients undergoing complete urine examination. Urine specimens were treated in three volume variations, namely twelve milliliters, eight milliliters, and five milliliters, then microscopic examination of urine sediment was performed to identify crystal findings. The data were analyzed using comparative statistical methods to assess differences in crystal findings across urine volumes. The results showed that urine volume variation significantly affected the number of crystals detected, with a tendency for fewer crystals as urine volume decreased. A higher urine volume resulted in greater crystal detection sensitivity than a lower one. These findings emphasize the importance of controlling pre-analytical factors, particularly urine volume, in urine sediment examination. Therefore, clinical laboratories need to establish minimum urine volume standards to improve the reliability of examination results.

Abstract

Lead exposure in automotive workshop environments is a significant occupational health problem because it can lead to heavy metal accumulation in the blood and affect various organ systems. Workshop workers are at high risk of lead exposure through inhalation and direct contact during vehicle maintenance and repair activities. This study aims to analyze lead levels in blood specimens from automotive workshop workers measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The study used a cross-sectional, observational, analytical design. The research subjects were automotive workshop workers in Banjar Karangsari who met the inclusion criteria. Nine blood samples were taken according to clinical laboratory procedures and measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically to describe the distribution of lead levels and their relationship with respondent characteristics. The results showed that automotive workshop workers had varying blood lead levels, with a tendency to increase in individuals with longer working hours and higher exposure intensity. The findings indicate that there are health risks due to lead exposure in the workshop work environment, which need to be addressed by increasing understanding of occupational safety and health in the informal sector.

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth infection remains a persistent public health concern, particularly among school-aged children who are frequently exposed to contaminated environments and may have suboptimal personal hygiene practices. This study aimed to identify the presence of soil-transmitted helminth eggs in students’ fingernails at an elementary school in Bali, Indonesia. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, involving 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Fingernail samples were collected and examined using the flotation method with saturated sodium chloride solution, followed by microscopic observation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the distribution of positive and negative findings. The results showed that a small proportion of samples were positive for helminth eggs, with only Ascaris lumbricoides identified, while the majority of samples were negative. These findings suggest that although fingernails can serve as a potential medium for helminth transmission, the level of contamination in this population appears relatively low. Nevertheless, the presence of positive cases indicates the continued importance of maintaining proper personal hygiene, particularly handwashing and regular nail care. This study highlights the relevance of simple preventive measures and supports the role of school-based hygiene education in reducing the risk of helminth infection among children.
