Abstract

Toxic relationships are increasingly prevalent among university students' romantic partnerships, marked by emotional manipulation, control, and poor communication. This study aims to examine the influence of emotion regulation and self-esteem on toxic relationships, both partially and simultaneously. A quantitative method was applied through a survey of 275 active students from various faculties at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Data were collected using validated and reliable Likert-scale instruments. Multiple linear regression analysis and classical assumption tests were employed. The findings revealed that both emotion regulation and self-esteem significantly influenced toxic relationships simultaneously, with emotion regulation being the dominant contributor. Students with higher emotion regulation and self-esteem levels showed lower tendencies to engage in destructive romantic interactions. These results imply the importance of enhancing emotional regulation skills and fostering self-esteem as preventive strategies to support healthy interpersonal relationships among university students
