Abstract

This study examines the Islamicate acculturation in the motifs of Kerinci Incung Batik as a form of cultural transformation in the Sungai Penuh community. Incung Batik is a traditional batik from Kerinci that uses the Incung script—a pre-Islamic ancient script—as its primary motif. Employing a historical approach with the historical method consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study traces how Islamic values became acculturated with local culture in Incung Batik motifs. The findings show that Islamic acculturation in Incung Batik does not involve the erasure of old cultural elements but rather their integration and symbolic reinterpretation. Evidence of acculturation is seen in motifs that combine Incung script with Islamic elements such as Incung calligraphy and the icon of the Great Mosque of Pondok Tinggi. This cultural transformation occurred evolutionarily, wherein the Incung script—originally used for sacred and magical writings (spells, curses)—was later revitalized as batik motifs carrying Islamic messages. This study concludes that Incung Batik is concrete evidence of harmonious Islamic acculturation in Kerinci, where pre-Islamic identity is not eliminated but enriched with Islamic values. The implications of this research are significant for understanding cultural acculturation in the Indonesian archipelago and for efforts to preserve cultural heritage based on local wisdom.
