Abstract

Anaemia in pregnancy is a significant public health issue that increases the risk of maternal and newborn complications. In addition to iron supplementation, indigenous foods rich in protein, iron, and essential micronutrients may serve as an adjunctive approach to improve haemoglobin levels. Goroho banana (Musa acuminata) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) are local foods from North Sulawesi with nutritional properties that support haemoglobin formation. This study aimed to examine the effect of a local dietary intervention using goroho banana and skipjack tuna on haemoglobin levels among pregnant women at Danowudu Primary Health Center. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was used. Thirty-two pregnant women were selected through purposive sampling. The study was conducted from March to May 2026. Haemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention and analyzed using a Paired Sample t-test with SPSS at a 95% confidence level. Mean haemoglobin increased from 10.13 ± 0.71 g/dL to 11.74 ± 0.75 g/dL, with a mean increase of 1.61 g/dL. The Paired Sample t-test showed a significant improvement (p < 0.001). The intervention significantly improved haemoglobin levels and may support anaemia prevention through local food-based nutritional counselling during antenatal care.
