Abstract

Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or action. Management of DM involves five key components: education, medical nutrition therapy, physical activity, pharmacological treatment, and self-monitoring of blood glucose. One critical component related to education is dietary adherence, which is guided by the 3J principles—type, amount, and timing of meals. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the level of dietary adherence and fasting blood glucose levels in patients with Type II DM at the Internal Medicine Clinic of Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie General Hospital, Samarinda. This was a quantitative analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design. A total of 23 respondents were selected through total sampling from the 2024 population of Type II DM patients. Dietary adherence data were collected using a validated questionnaire by Pramayudi (2021), while fasting blood glucose data were obtained from medical records. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed that (65.2%) respondents were non-adherent to the 3J diet and (78.3%) respondents had uncontrolled fasting blood glucose levels. A statistically significant relationship was found between dietary adherence and fasting blood glucose levels (p = 0.033). The odds ratio (OR) of 14.000 indicates that patients who were non-adherent had a 14-times higher risk of having uncontrolled fasting blood glucose compared to those who adhered to the dietary recommendations. So, there is a significant association between dietary adherence and fasting blood glucose levels in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus at the Internal Medicine Clinic of Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie General Hospital, Samarinda.
