Abstract

The major problem of teaching English faced by the teachers in class seems that learners are not interested in studying. There are some factors why it happened. One of them is the limitation of instructional media in English teaching-learning process. There are many kinds of instructional media that the teachers can use in teaching process from the simplest ones to the complex or modern ones as cited in Depdiknas (2005). They are: visual, audio, audio-visual, tactile, and virtual. According to Sukartiwi (1996), the advantages of using media in teaching-learning process are: to increase the learners’ motivation, to avoid the learners bored, to make the learners easy to understand the material, and to make the teaching learning process more systematic. The role of media is very important in English teaching-learning process to achieve the instructional goal. Among the implicit goals that media can be helped by teachers to achieve are as follows: attracting attention, developing interest, adjusting the learning climate, and promoting acceptance (of an idea).

Abstract

This study seeks to answer a research question: how are the participants introduced in the story? Introducing people mostly covers definite (presuming) more than indefinite (presenting) and difference (comparative). Tracking people aspect mostly deals with pronouns (presuming) more than with name (possessive) and with “the” (presuming). Possession aspect is used “by possessive pronouns” more than “by possession”. The story produces possession (126.31%) dominated by possessive pronouns, tracking people (90.51%) dominated by possessive (name), and introducing people (47.42%) dominated by definite (presuming).

The method of the research is experimental. The population of this research is the tenth grade students of SMK Nurul Huda NU Paguyangan. The samples of the research were class X AK1 as experimental class which consisted of 27 students and class X AK2 as control class which consisted of 27 students. In collecting the data, the writer uses tests (pre and post-test), questionnaire, and documentation. The writer used true experimental design and quantitative method to analyze the data. After the data are collected by using test, the pre-test average of the experimental class is 65.04 and control class is 65.63. Meanwhile, the post-test average of the experimental class is 68.59 and control class is 65.78. Based on data analysis by using SPSS 16.0 program, it is found that the score sig is 0.523 (more than 0.05) and the score from Equal Variance Assumed (Sig 2-tailed) was 0.012 (less than 0.05). It means that both of classes have same variant but have difference achievement. Besides, the mean of experimental class is higher than control class (68.59 > 65.78). From the data, it can be concluded that the treatment in experimental class is successful. Therefore, the hypothesis states that using Draw What I Say technique is effective for teaching writing in descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMK Nurul Huda NU Paguyangan in the academic year 2015/2016 is accepted.

Abstract

The aim of this study is analysing the sense relations realized in the album. In doing this study the writers employ descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile, the data of this study are taken from the song lyrics of album V (Deluxe Version) by Maroon 5. The writers use sense relations theory of Hurford and Heasley (1986) to identify whether they are synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, homonymy, and polysemy. The result shows that the writers find 34 cases of sense relations in the album. There are 4 types found consisting of 12 cases of synonymy (35,29%), 13 cases of antonymy (38,23%), 6 cases of hyponymy (17,64%), 3 cases of homonymy (8,82%), and 0 case of polysemy (0%).
