Abstract

Leather tannery workers face combined occupational and environmental hazards from chemical handling, wet processes, aerosols, dust, and inadequate workplace protection. In chromium-using tannery settings, these hazards highlight the need for systematic assessment of worker health and workplace exposure controls. This pilot study aimed to generate preliminary evidence to inform subsequent chromium exposure risk characterization through occupational health screening and workplace control assessment among Indonesian tannery workers. Method this study is An exploratory cross-sectional pilot study was conducted among 47 male leather tannery workers. Worker health status was screened using blood pressure, hemoglobin, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference, complemented by questionnaire data and observation checklists on personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, and administrative controls. Results this study is most workers were aged 45–59 years (42.6%) and had worked for >10 years (59.6%). Elevated blood pressure was common, low hemoglobin was found in 4.3%, 40.4% had BMI ≥25 kg/m², and 27.7% had waist circumference ≥90 cm. Protective eyewear and aprons were poorly used, and major workplace gaps included inappropriate respiratory protection, absent safe-work SOPs, lack of annual PPE training, and weak supervision. Conclusion this study is Worker-health risk indicators coexisted with substantial workplace control deficiencies, providing preliminary information on worker susceptibility and control conditions relevant to subsequent chromium exposure risk characterization.
