Abstract

Acute dyspnea is an emergency condition requiring rapid and accurate assessment because it may progress to clinical deterioration and death. This study aimed to analyze factors affecting the outcomes of patients with acute dyspnea in the Emergency Department of Syekh Yusuf Regional General Hospital, Gowa Regency. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted involving 81 patients with acute dyspnea selected according to the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through medical record observation and assessment forms and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses. Patient outcomes were categorized as improved/discharged, hospitalized, or deceased. The results showed that among 81 respondents, 43 patients (53.1%) had an improved outcome and were discharged, 32 patients (39.5%) were hospitalized, and 6 patients (7.4%) died. Factors associated with patient outcomes included oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, level of consciousness, and emergency severity at triage. Patients with low oxygen saturation, increased respiratory rate, decreased consciousness, and higher emergency severity tended to have poorer outcomes. These findings indicate that initial respiratory and clinical conditions play an important role in determining the prognosis of patients with acute dyspnea. In conclusion, outcomes among patients with acute dyspnea in the Emergency Department are influenced by initial clinical conditions, particularly oxygenation status, respiratory rate, level of consciousness, and emergency severity. Rapid assessment, continuous monitoring, and appropriate emergency interventions are essential to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes. Early identification of high-risk patients should therefore become an important component of emergency nursing management.
