Abstract

Background : Malnutrition issues among pregnant women, such as Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) and anemia, remain a serious challenge in efforts to reduce stunting rates in Indonesia. The limitation of interactive Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) media in primary health services results in low self-awareness for early risk detection among pregnant women. Objective : This study aims to design and develop a visual-based storybook with a contextual approach as an educational media for early detection of malnutrition risk in pregnant women at Public Health Centers (Puskesmas). Methods : The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with a modified ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The stages include analyzing nutritional literacy needs, designing storylines and local visual illustrations, developing print and digital prototypes, expert validation (content and media), and limited trials involving 35 respondents in the Pregnant Women Class at a Puskesmas in Padang City. Result :Expert validation results showed that the storybook media is highly feasible. Trial results indicated a significant increase in knowledge scores before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). Conclusion:The contextual visual storybook media proved to be effective, communicative, and can serve as an alternative upstream CIE media to improve independent nutritional literacy in pregnant women.
