Abstract

Differences in qibla direction within a Muslim community demonstrate that religious issues involve not only fiqh and measurement accuracy but also social dynamics. This study examines how the congregation of Baitul Aman Mosque, Balai-Balai Balimbing, West Sumatra, manages differences in qibla direction through religious moderation. This qualitative study employs a case study design. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews with religious leaders, mosque administrators, and congregants. The data were analyzed descriptively using triangulation of sources. The findings reveal that two qibla orientations continue to be practiced following a remeasurement conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. While some congregants follow the newly measured direction, others maintain the previous orientation. Nevertheless, these differences have not developed into significant social conflict. Tolerance, fairness, respect for differences, concern for the common good, and respect for local traditions help both groups worship together. The findings indicate that religious moderation can effectively manage differences in fiqh and religious practice within Muslim communities.
