Abstract

Peatland ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the urban microclimate through the role of vegetation in regulating temperature, air humidity, and light intensity. This study aims to identify vegetation characteristics, analyze differences in microclimate conditions between peatland and non-peatland areas, and examine the relationship between vegetation characteristics and microclimate comfort in the city of Pekanbaru. The study was conducted at four stations: a protected peatland, a cultivated peatland, an urban forest, and an office district. The observed parameters included air temperature, relative humidity, light intensity, and Temperature Humidity Index (THI), while vegetation characteristics included diameter at height (DBH), tree height, and canopy area. Data analysis utilized the Importance Value Index (IVI), the Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman’s correlation. The results showed that all sites had THI values in the “comfortable” category. Air temperature and relative humidity did not differ significantly between peatland and non-peatland areas, whereas light intensity differed significantly . Canopy area showed a strong but non-significant negative relationship with light intensity , indicating that larger canopy tends to reduce surface light intensity. These results suggest that vegetation, particularly canopy area, plays an important role in maintaining microclimate conditions and urban thermal comfort in Pekanbaru, even though the statistical relationship is not yet significant.
