Abstract

Nursing students have their own demands and challenges, both in terms of academic theory and field practice, because nursing students must make intense and detailed preparations so that no mistakes occur in the implementation of nursing procedures. This makes nursing students prone to feeling incompatible with the environment, material, and learning process . The incompatibility between nursing students and the academic environment, known as academic misfit, has the potential to affect psychological conditions, including the level of self-esteem. This study aims to analyze the relationship between academic misfit and self-esteem in undergraduate nursing students at the Indonesia University of Education, Sumedang Campus. The method used was a correlational quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 237 undergraduate nursing students from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 cohorts. The research instruments included the Perceived Person-Environment Fit Scale to measure the level of academic misfit and the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory to measure self-esteem levels. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed that there was a weak correlation between academic misfit and self-esteem (r = 0.286; p < 0.001). The conclusion is that a decrease in academic misfit is followed by a change toward an increase in self-esteem.Keyword: Academic misfit, Nursing student, Self-esteem
