Abstract

Environmental pollution caused by heavy metals such as chromium is found in various industrial activities, including the leather tanning industry. One approach to address such pollution is bioremediation using microorganisms. In its application, microorganisms must undergo detailed taxonomic identification to the species level to minimize competition among bacterial strains. This study aimed to investigate the biochemical characteristics, molecular identities, and growth responses of bacterial isolates under chromium stress. An experimental method with a descriptive quantitative design was employed. Four bacterial isolates from heavy-metal-contaminated rhizosphere soil were identified through biochemical tests, 16S rRNA gene analysis, and growth observation. Data were analyzed using the Man-Whitney U test to determine whether Cr(VI) stress significantly affected the growth of the isolates. The results identified four Bacillales isolates: Bacillus sp., Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus paralicheniformis, and Brevibacillus borstelensis. All isolates grew at 500 ppm, while B. paralicheniformis grew at concentrations up to 1000 ppm. This study provides information on the potential of rhizosphere bacteria as bioremediation agents for chromium-contaminated environments.
