Abstract

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is the primary cooking fuel for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, yet leaks are often detected only by smell, delaying warnings and raising fire risk. This community service activity designed and implemented an Internet of Things (IoT)-based gas leak warning system for one culinary partner in Kelurahan Dalung, Serang City, as part of a 40-day Kuliah Kerja Mahasiswa (KKM) program. The device combines an ESP32-C3 microcontroller with an MQ-2 gas sensor, a buzzer, and an RGB indicator for local alerts, and sends remote notifications to the partner's smartphone through the Blynk application. The detection threshold is calibrated automatically to the clean-air baseline of each kitchen to reduce false alarms. The device was tested both in a controlled environment and at the partner's kitchen, measuring the calibrated threshold value, false alarm rate, and notification delivery effectiveness. Results show a consistent calibrated threshold of approximately 19.5 ppm in the controlled test area and 19.4 ppm at the partner site, a low false alarm rate (1 of 30 trials in the test area; 0 of 15 trials at the partner site), and a notification success rate of 90–93.3%, with failures attributed solely to unstable internet connections. As an initial feasibility study limited to a single partner over a short observation period, the results are indicative rather than generalizable, and further work is recommended to extend the trial duration, partner coverage, and reliability of the system.
