Abstract

Digesters are one of the main equipment in the palm oil processing process which has a vital role in maintaining smooth production in palm oil mills. The high intensity of operation makes the digester vulnerable to damage if not supported by an effective maintenance system. This study aims to evaluate the maintenance system on the digester at PT. Nusantara Plantation IV Regional III Plantation Unit and Adolina PKS using the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method. This method is used to identify potential failures and assess the level of risk through the calculation of the Risk Priority Number (RPN). The research data was obtained through field observations, interviews with maintenance technicians, and analysis of historical data on engine damage and downtime. The results of the study show that digester damage is influenced by machine, human, method, material, and environmental factors. The FMEA analysis revealed that there were several failure modes with the highest RPN values that were the top priority for improvement. Based on these results, recommendations for maintenance system improvements are prepared which are expected to be able to reduce downtime and improve digester reliability. Thus, the implementation of an FMEA-based maintenance system can be an effective strategy in supporting the sustainability of palm oil mill operations.
