Abstract

Driven by rapid technological growth, over 50% of Indonesians are active social media users, with Generation Z leading the trend, particularly on Instagram. This shift in behavior has resulted in many users creating “second accounts” to serve as safe spaces for expression, driven by a tendency to overshare on primary accounts. This quantitative study, utilizing purposive sampling with 349 respondents, aims to explore how intimate friendship and anonymity influence self-disclosure on social media. Through multiple linear regression analysis, the study reveals that both factors, when combined, have a significant impact on self-disclosure (R² = 0.022, p = 0.023), explaining 2.2% of the variance in self-disclosure. However, partial analysis indicates that while intimate friendship significantly influences self-disclosure, anonymity does not have the same effect. The results suggest that self-disclosure in second accounts is primarily driven by the sense of intimate friendship between users, rather than by the perceived anonymity of the platform. Based on these findings, the study concludes by advising social media users to manage their second accounts carefully, considering the potential risks associated with oversharing and maintaining privacy in digital spaces.
