Abstract

Background: Sedentary lifestyle is characterized by prolonged sitting or low physical activity and has become increasingly common among medical students due to academic demands and extensive use of electronic devices. This behavior may contribute to musculoskeletal complaints as well as early metabolic changes such as increased fasting blood glucose levels. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sedentary lifestyle, musculoskeletal complaints, and fasting blood glucose levels among medical students at universitas muhammadiyah sumatera utara. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross sectional approach. a total of 95 medical students were selected using simple random sampling. Sedentary lifestyle was assessed using the sedentary behavior questionnaire while musculoskeletal complaints were measured using the nordic body map. Fasting blood glucose levels were examined using the glucose oxidase method. data were analyzed using spearman correlation with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The analysis showed a significant positive correlation between sedentary lifestyle and musculoskeletal complaints (r = 0.509; p < 0.001), indicating that higher sedentary behavior was associated with increased musculoskeletal complaints. A significant positive correlation was also found between sedentary lifestyle and fasting blood glucose levels (r = 0.243; p = 0.018). Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between sedentary lifestyle, musculoskeletal complaints, and fasting blood glucose levels among medical students. Prolonged sitting behavior may negatively affect musculoskeletal and metabolic health. Therefore regular education and promotion of light physical activity are needed to reduce health risks associated with sedentary lifestyle among medical students.
