Abstract

The intra uterine device (IUD) is one of the most effective long-term contraceptive methods for preventing pregnancy. However, various studies show that IUD low utilization rates are influenced by multiple determinants, both internal and external. This literature review aims to analyze the internal and external factors that contribute to IUD use among women of reproductive age. The method used was a systematic literature review of five national journals published between 2018–2023, obtained from Garuda, Google Scholar, and DOAJ databases. The internal factors identified include age, education, parity, knowledge, attitude, occupation, and income. External factors include husband’s support, health workers’ support, availability of contraceptive facilities, and access to reproductive health services. The findings reveal that knowledge and attitude are the most dominant internal factors, while husband’s support and the role of health workers are the main external factors influencing IUD success and continuity. Strengthening counseling, empowering women through education, and involving partners are crucial to minimize IUD failure and improve contraceptive effectiveness.
