Abstract

Adolescent smoking is a major public health concern in Indonesia, with an increasing prevalence among individuals aged 10–18 years. One of the factors that may influence smoking behavior is helicopter parenting, a parenting style characterized by excessive parental involvement and control over adolescents' lives. This study aimed to examine the relationship between helicopter parenting and the level of smoking addiction among adolescents. This research employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory correlational design. The participants consisted of 100 male adolescents aged 13–18 years in Palembang City who had experience with cigarette smoking. Data were collected using 4-point Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using the Spearman's Rank Correlation test with IBM SPSS. The findings revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between helicopter parenting and the level of smoking addiction (r = 0.217, p = 0.030 < 0.05). Most respondents reported experiencing a high level of helicopter parenting (75%), while the majority demonstrated a moderate level of smoking addiction (40%). These findings suggest that excessive parental control may hinder adolescents' autonomy and self-regulation, thereby increasing their vulnerability to smoking behavior as a coping mechanism.
