Abstract

Smoking is a habit that can reduce cardiorespiratory function and affect a person's VO max capacity. Students who are active in physical activities need optimal cardiorespiratory endurance, so smoking can potentially affect their physical performance. This study aims to determine the relationship between smoking behavior and cardiorespiratory endurance in male students of the Health Education Study Program at the University of Jambi. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted to investigate the research objectives. The sample consisted of 96 respondents, comprising 48 smokers and 48 non-smokers. Data on smoking behavior was obtained through a questionnaire, while cardiorespiratory endurance was measured using a beep test. The data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical methods, with the Chi-square test applied to assess the association between variables. The results showed that most smokers had poor cardiorespiratory endurance (37 people), while the non-smoking group was dominated by those with moderate endurance (26 people). Smoking behavior showed a statistically significant association with cardiorespiratory endurance (p 0.001). A significant association was observed between the number of cigarettes smoked and cardiorespiratory fitness. The duration of smoking was also found to be significantly associated with cardiorespiratory endurance. However, BMI status did not show a significant association with cardiorespiratory endurance. In conclusion, smoking behavior has a negative effect on the cardiorespiratory endurance of students. Education on the health risks of smoking and the importance of maintaining physical fitness should be enhanced to support healthier lifestyles and improve physical performance.
