Abstract

Cupational strain experienced by production personnel within the manufacturing sector operating under rotating shift systems continues to constitute an occupational health and safety concern that warrants attention, particularly within industrial settings in Batam City. The interrelation among work shifts, fatigue intensity, and sleep quality in relation to occupational stress among production workers at PT X Batam City in 2026 constitutes the objective of this study. A cross-sectional approach within an analytical observational design was employed, involving 78 production workers through a total sampling technique. Data collection was conducted utilizing work shift questionnaires, the Industrial Fatigue Research Committee (IFRC) questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index  (PSQI), and the Stress Diagnostic Survey (SDS). The classification of occupational stress was determined based on the median value, categorized into low and high groups, followed by univariate and bivariate data analysis using the Chi-Square test. The findings of the assessment indicate that no significant association was identified between work shifts and occupational stress (p = 0.841). Conversely, fatigue level (p = 0.001) and sleep quality (p = 0.017) were demonstrated to have significant associations with occupational stress. The likelihood of experiencing elevated occupational stress was greater among workers exhibiting higher fatigue levels and poorer sleep quality. The study outcomes underscore the importance of fatigue management measures and the optimization of sleep quality through the implementation of workplace health programs. These findings offer practical guidance for occupational health policy in shift-based manufacturing settings, particularly in priorittizing fatigue surveillance and sleep-quality interventions over shift-schedule restructurig alone.
