Abstract

This study examines the challenges of teaching respect for parents in shaping students’ character in the digital age and explores adaptive strategies to enhance its effectiveness. A mixed-methods approach was used, which included a survey of 250 middle and high school students, interviews with 30 parents and 15 teachers, and a three-month analysis of students’ interactions on social media. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were explored using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that education on respecting parents faces significant challenges in the digital environment. Approximately 82% of students reported ignoring or questioning their parents’ advice after being exposed to online content, while 74% of teachers stated that values related to respect are often taught theoretically without adequate practical application. Three main factors were identified: inadequate parental role modeling in the digital context, the absence of clear consequences for disrespectful online behavior, and limited opportunities for reflective communication between parents and children. This study suggests that integrating education on respecting parents with digital literacy, strengthening parental and teacher role modeling, and encouraging reflective dialogue can enhance character development among students. These findings contribute to the development of character education practices that are more adaptive and contextually relevant in the digital age.
