Abstract

Marriage in Islam is recommended to be carried out easily and without burdening either party. However, marital practices in society are often influenced by customs and traditions that have developed over generations. One such tradition is the "lost money" tradition in Minangkabau society, particularly in Solok Regency, which involves the groom giving a sum of money to the bride as part of a traditional wedding ceremony. This study aims to analyze the "lost money" tradition, its influence on the postponement of marriage for the younger generation, and its perspective from an Islamic legal perspective. This study used a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were obtained from books, scientific journals, articles, undergraduate theses, and relevant documents, then analyzed descriptively. The results show that "lost money" initially served as a symbol of respect for the bride and her family. However, social and economic changes have caused this tradition to become a financial burden for the groom and encouraged some young people to postpone marriage until they have sufficient financial capacity. From an Islamic legal perspective, this tradition is acceptable as 'urf' as long as it does not conflict with sharia. If it causes difficulties and hinders marriage, adjustments are needed based on the principles of convenience and benefit.
