Abstract

This article examines how imperative constructions and numerals function in Kyrgyz and English legal texts to shape legal obligations, precision, and the interpretation of norms. Using a qualitative and comparative methodology, the study analyzes a corpus of 100 legal documents—50 from each language, encompassing statutes, contracts, and court rulings—to identify syntactic and semantic patterns relevant to legal drafting and translation. The results reveal significant cross-linguistic differences: English relies heavily on explicit modal verbs (such as shall and must) and isolated numerals to assert clear legal boundaries. Conversely, Kyrgyz integrates obligations and quantities through narrative structures, grammatical suffixes, and specific expressions (such as милдеттүү and тийиш). The study concludes that these structural distinctions directly affect legal certainty and the applicability of norms. Consequently, these differences must be carefully addressed in bilingual legal drafting, professional translation practices, and legal linguistic education to prevent ambiguous interpretations of rights and obligations.
