Abstract

Reading ability is a fundamental skill essential for students to master various subjects. If elementary school students are not able to read well, they will have difficulty participating in subsequent classes. Reading difficulties experienced by students include difficulty distinguishing letters such as "b" from "d" and "p" from "q." Furthermore, students are not yet fluent readers and lack understanding of punctuation. There are 25 second-grade students at MI NW No. 2 Langgalawe, and 15 of them still experience reading difficulties. Yet, good reading skills are a key component of academic success. This study aims to identify the reading difficulties experienced by second-grade students at MI NW No. 2 Langgalawe. The research used field research, which is conducted directly in the field with participants to obtain data and information. The data sources for this study were the principal, second-grade teachers, and second-grade students at MI NW No. 2 Langgalawe. Data collection techniques were interviews, observation, and documentation. Based on the research results, it was concluded that students had difficulty distinguishing letters, spelling words incorrectly, not understanding the function of punctuation, and not being fluent in reading, thus not understanding the content of the reading well. In assessing students' reading abilities, teachers used five aspects of reading assessment. Teachers' efforts to improve students' reading abilities were carried out using the demonstration method. Internal and external factors influenced students' reading difficulties.
