Abstract

This study aims to describe the heuristic and hermeneutic readings of Hanna Fransisca’s poetry collection Konde using Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory and to reveal the representation of Chinese Indonesian identity embedded in the poems. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data sources consisted of five poems: Puisi Mei, Arisan, Di Depan Kubur Keluarga, Hari Kue Bulan, and Pasar Beringin. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques by repeatedly reading the poems and identifying words, phrases, lines, and stanzas representing Chinese Indonesian identity. Data analysis was conducted through heuristic and hermeneutic reading stages based on Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory and the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation involving a semiotics expert, a literature lecturer, and an Indonesian language teacher. The findings indicate that heuristic reading reveals the literal meaning of the poems through their linguistic structure, whereas hermeneutic reading uncovers symbolic meanings representing Chinese Indonesian identity through cultural traditions, religious rituals, ancestral reverence, culinary heritage, history, and community values. These identities are symbolized through cultural elements such as dragon dances, angpao, konde, incense, temples, mooncakes, Chinese deities, and traditional rituals. The study concludes that Konde functions not only as a literary work but also as a medium for preserving Chinese Indonesian cultural identity through a meaningful semiotic system.
