Abstract

This paper sets out to describe the morphophonemic patterns that appear in Hujan Bulan Juni, a poem by Sapardi Djoko Damono. The motivation behind this study is the fact that scholarly attention to the morphophonemic side of literary texts is still rather scarce, even though such processes play a real part in shaping words while also lending sonic beauty and depth of meaning to a poem. The study relies on a qualitative approach carried out descriptively. The data source is the text of Hujan Bulan Juni, and the data itself consists of words displaying morphophonemic behavior. Data were gathered through the observation method combined with note taking, then processed using the distributional method and the Immediate Constituent Analysis (BUL) technique. The findings show that the most prominent morphophonemic patterns come from the affixes di-, ber-, and ter-, none of which trigger phoneme elision, as seen in dirahasiakannya, berbunga, dibiarkannya, terucapkan, and diserap. Reduplication also appears in jejak-jejak and ragu-ragu; although no sound change occurs, both forms reinforce plurality and intensity of meaning. Overall, the morphophonemic processes in this poem are fairly simple and involve minimal phoneme change, yet they still contribute to sonic beauty, ease of pronunciation, and the strengthening of the poet's intended meaning. These morphophonemic forms can thus be regarded as a linguistic element that helps build the aesthetic character of Sapardi Djoko Damono's work.
