Abstract

Anemia is a condition characterized by a reduced level of hemoglobin in the blood. It remains a serious global health problem that affects women of reproductive age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Worldwide Prevalence of Anemia, approximately 1.62 billion people worldwide suffer from anemia, with prevalence rates of 47.4% among preschool-aged children, 25.4% among school-aged children, 41.8% among women of reproductive age, and 12.7% among men. As a fruit with a relatively high vitamin C content, red guava (Psidium guajava) has the potential to serve as an adjunct therapy for mild anemia by enhancing iron absorption in the body. This study employed a true experimental design. Seventeen adolescent girls were divided into two groups. The first treatment group received Fe tablets (Sangobion) combined with 100 mL of red guava (Psidium guajava) juice daily for seven consecutive days, while the second treatment group received only Fe tablets (Sangobion) daily for seven consecutive days. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test, which showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). The mean pretest hemoglobin levels were 10.63 g/dL (Treatment 1) and 11.63 g/dL (Treatment 2), while the mean posttest hemoglobin levels were 12.60 g/dL (Treatment 1) and 12.79 g/dL (Treatment 2). An independent t-test yielded a significance value of 0.001 (< 0.05), with a greater mean increase in hemoglobin levels in Treatment 1 (1.97 g/dL) compared with Treatment 2 (1.16 g/dL). These findings indicate that the combination of Fe tablets and red guava (Psidium guajava) juice is more effective in increasing hemoglobin levels than Fe tablets alone.
