Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that continues to be a major challenge in public health because it can lead to various serious complications if left untreated. Public knowledge plays an important role in shaping preventive behaviors and adherence to hypertension treatment. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge, behavior, and treatment regarding hypertension among the community of Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan, and to analyze the relationship between knowledge and behavior as well as hypertension treatment. This study employed a quantitative research method with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling involving 57 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Fisher's Exact Test/Chi-Square test at a significance level of 5%. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge (57.9%), good behavior (57.9%), and good treatment practices (61.4%). The bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between knowledge and hypertension-related behavior (p = 0.000) and a significant relationship between knowledge and hypertension treatment (p = 0.005). Community knowledge was found to influence hypertension-related behavior and treatment. The higher an individual's level of knowledge, the better their preventive behavior and adherence to hypertension treatment. Therefore, continuous health education programs are needed to improve public knowledge regarding hypertension prevention and management.
