Abstract

English verbs have unique inflectional markers which show the past tense. There are two inflectional markers that become the categorization of these verbs. The first marker is the additional morpheme [d] or [ed]. All verbs with this marker are categorized as regular verbs. The second marker is the verb morphophonemic change like the word ‘sing’ [+present] and ‘sang’ [+past]. The verbs of this kind are categorized as irregular’ verbs. Simply, the regular verbs are those whose changes can be morphophonemically predicted while irregular verbs are the ones whose changes are morphophonemically unpredictable. This research is aimed to figure out whether there are morphophonemic inflectional patterns for irregular verbs. This paper is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected using observation with note taking technique. I analyzed the data using distributional method. The result of the analysis shows that there are four additional sounds added to the ’regular’ verbs such as [d], [t], [ɪd], and [əd]. I also found that the morphophonemic changes in the irregular verbs are influenced by the syllable number, the positions, and the environments of the peak sounds. These findings prove that the term “irregular and regular” is not fully appropriate to classify the verbs.

Abstract

This systematic literature review explored the incorporation of local culture into foreign language learning through humour, a topic of interesting relevance in language education. The research showed the shift from traditional language teaching methods to using humour and cultural elements to improve learning outcomes. Additionally, the method used during the research was a systematic review of forty-three scientific articles, focusing on publications ranging from 2017 to 2024 to ensure the results as well as implications were up-to-date and reliable. The result of the finding showed how these elements were effectively incorporated into foreign language teaching practices to promote language acquisition as well as understanding of culture. This research signified the importance of humour in conveying cultural nuances and improving intercultural competence. The finding also signified that incorporating local culture through humour increased language proficiency, cultivated appreciation of students concerning different cultures, and promoted intercultural communication skills. This research provided valuable insights for educators to develop innovative language teaching strategies that would create engaging and rich learning environments for language students. Future research should focus on exploring long-term impacts of using humour and incorporating local culture on the intercultural competence of students. Additionally, examining the application of the method across different age groups, proficiency levels, and cultural contexts would be recommended. Further results could investigate the role of technology in increasing the use of humour and culture incorporation in language education.

Abstract

In generative grammar, particularly within X-bar theory, all syntactic structures are endocentric. This principle dictates that a clause or sentence must be analyzed as an inflectional phrase (IP), with the inflectional category as its head. While this principle has been attested across numerous languages and is considered universal, languages like Javanese exhibit patterns distinct from inflectional systems such as English. This study examines the existence of inflectional phrases in Sasaknese, which have not been discussed yet in any other studies of Sasak language, using data from Sasaknese book collected through observational methods. The analysis confirms that Sasaknese lexicons expressing tense, aspect, and modality belong to inflections and project maximally as an Inflectional Phrase.
