However, many children perceive English as a difficult and intimidating subject. To introduce English in an enjoyable manner to children, it is necessary to have learning media that captivate, excite, and motivate them to learn. Considering this, a community service activity is carried out. The target partners in this community service activity are four English teachers who teach at the Transmigration English Village in the Karang Indah Village, Barito Kuala Regency. This activity uses the Community Based Research (CBR) method, to address real problems and offer solutions to the issues faced by the community, specifically in creating affordable and easily producible English learning media for teachers. The activity includes planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. The results of this community service show that the teachers can understand the process of creating and subsequently producing the learning media they have been trained for. Moreover, they also know how to use these media in English teaching. Through classroom observations, it was noted that 100% of students actively participated in English learning and were more motivated.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive book as a medium to foster empathy in early childhood towards endemic animals in South Kalimantan, particularly the proboscis monkey (Bekantan) and mudskipper fish (Timpakul). The research follows a research and development (R&D) methodology, encompassing need analysis, product design, development, and evaluation stages. The interactive book, titled Antan & Kepi: The Friendship that Grew by the River, tells the story of a friendship between Antan, the proboscis monkey, and Kepi, the mudskipper, which forms when Antan shows empathy by rescuing Kepi from being trapped in rocks. The book aims to address the identified lack of local wisdom-based reading materials, particularly those featuring endemic animals, available to young learners in South Kalimantan. The product was validated by two experts: a media expert and an early childhood English expert. The validation process assessed content feasibility, alignment with psychological and linguistic development, and technical aspects of media presentation. The final product received an overall validation score of 86.08%, indicating high feasibility for use. Despite this, experts suggested improvements in font size and image clarity to enhance readability and visual appeal. The findings highlight the potential of interactive media to contextualize learning and support language acquisition while instilling empathy and environmental awareness in young children. The interactive book provides an engaging, culturally relevant resource for early childhood education, offering a meaningful, localized learning experience that connects children with their environment.

Abstract

Old Nypa fruit (Nypa fruticans) often becomes waste in Salo Palai Village, East Kalimantan, due to a lack of knowledge regarding its utilization. Therefore, this activity aims to empower the community through training on processing old Nypa fruit into flour and nuggets, enhancing economic value, and reducing waste by utilizing local natural resources. The method consists of socialization by an expert speaker followed by a workshop on processing Nypa fruit. The activities were attended by members of the forest farmer group in Salo Palai Village. The outcome of this activity includes the production of Nypa fruit flour and nuggets made from Nypa flour. The results indicate that the residents of Salo Palai Village, particularly the members of the farmer group, are capable of applying information and technology related to processing aged Nypa fruit into flour and nuggets.

Abstract

Descriptive text is an important part of the English curriculum in junior high school, especially for seventh-grade students. However, many students faced difficulties in understanding descriptive text, which hindered their reading comprehension and limited their academic achievement. Traditional teaching methods were often ineffective in engaging students. In contrast, gamification had been recognized as an innovative strategy to increase student motivation and improve learning outcomes. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of the Blooket platform on students' reading comprehension ability in descriptive texts. This study uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The subjects of the study were 76 seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Banjarmasin who were divided into experimental classes and control classes through cluster random sampling techniques. Both classes are given pre-tests and post-tests that focus on descriptive texts. The data analysis technique used was the Mann-Whitney U test with the help of SPSS version 26. The result showed that there was a significant difference between the post-test scores of students taught using Blooket and those taught using Quizizz. The experimental class achieved higher scores, with a significance value 0.000, which was lower than the 0.05 threshold. It can therefore be concluded that the Blooket platform had a significant positive impact on students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. Consequently, it is recommended that English teachers integrate Blooket into their teaching practices to foster greater student engagement and improve comprehension outcomes.
