Abstract

Globalization, technological transformation, and increasing competition require educational institutions to implement strategic management to maintain and strengthen sustainable competitive advantage. This study aims to examine strategic management concepts, determinants of competitive advantage, implementation practices, strategic models, and future research directions for educational institutions, particularly senior high schools in Bandar Lampung City. This study employs a qualitative approach using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to analyze scholarly literature published from 2014 to 2026, obtained from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus, DOAJ, and Portal Garuda, using thematic analysis and narrative synthesis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The findings indicate that effective strategic management involves integrated environmental analysis, strategy formulation, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Competitive advantage is primarily supported by strategic leadership, teacher competence, organizational culture, intellectual capital, digital transformation, governance, and distinctive educational programs. Evidence from Bandar Lampung demonstrates that stakeholder participation, SWOT-based planning, differentiated programs, and data-informed management can strengthen institutional competitiveness. The main finding is that sustainable competitive advantage requires integration between external competitive positioning, internal strategic resources, digital innovation, and systematic evaluation. The study implies that school leaders should develop adaptive, measurable, participatory, and resource-based strategies to strengthen institutional quality, reputation, and competitiveness.
