Abstract

Background: Family support is a determining factor in adherence to long-term tuberculosis (TB) treatment. This support includes practical assistance, such as medication reminders, motivation, and companionship. Low family support can increase the risk of nonadherence and treatment discontinuation. Medication adherence is key to treatment success and the prevention of drug resistance. Given the high burden of TB cases in Indonesia and adherence challenges at the local level, research on the relationship between family support and medication adherence among patients with TB is essential to improve adherence. Aim: To determine the relationship between family support and medication adherence among patients with tuberculosis at the Bangil Community Health Center, Pasuruan Regency. Methods: This was a correlational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was obtained using a total sampling technique. The research instruments included the Perceived Social Support Family Scale (PSS-Fa) questionnaire to measure family support and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) to measure medication adherence. This study was conducted at the Bangil Community Health Center in Pasuruan Regency. Results: Bivariate chi-square analysis revealed a statistically significant association between family support (PSS-Fa) and tuberculosis medication adherence (MMAS-8): Pearson Chi-Square = 34.142, (df = 2, p = 0,000 or p < 0,1). The Likelihood Ratio also indicated significance (p = 0,000 or p = < 0,001), as did the Linear-by-Linear Association test (p = 0.045). All results were significant at α = 0.05. Conclusion: A significant linear positive relationship exists between family support and tuberculosis medication adherence among patients at the Bangil Community Health Centre. However, family support perceived as "good" does not fully translate into "high" adherence, indicating the need for a more holistic and structured approach to family involvement to enhance the effectiveness of support in promoting TB treatment adherence.
