Abstract

Adolescence involves substantial emotional and social demands, making emotion regulation essential for healthy psychological adjustment. This study examined the relationships of self-compassion and social support with adolescents’ emotion regulation and their joint predictive contribution. A quantitative correlational design involved 803 students aged 15–19 years at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Gresik, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using standardized self-report measures: the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents, the Self-Compassion Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Analyses included normality and linearity testing, simple linear regression, Spearman rank correlation, and multiple linear regression using JASP version 0.19. Results revealed significant positive relationships between self-compassion and emotion regulation and between social support and emotion regulation, with self-compassion demonstrating the stronger standardized association. Considered simultaneously, both variables significantly predicted emotion regulation, jointly explaining 19.2% of its variance. These findings emphasize the importance of nurturing self-compassion and supportive social relationships to promote healthier emotional development among adolescents and provide a basis for school-based psychological interventions.
