Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of fellowship (koinonia) in shaping the character of young people as part of the Human Capacity Development strategy within the Karo Batak Protestant Church (Gereja Batak Karo Protestan/GBKP). The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), participant observation, and document analysis involving youth mentors, pastors, church leaders, and young people from three GBKP congregations: GBKP Simpang Tuntungen (urban), GBKP KSD Simpang Tuntungen (semi-urban), and GBKP Bintang Meriah (rural). Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that fellowship plays a strategic role in fostering spirituality, Christian character, leadership, social competence, and young people's readiness to face the challenges of the digital era. When implemented consistently, fellowship serves as an effective means of Human Capacity Development by promoting learning, mentoring, ministry involvement, and interpersonal relationships among its members. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of fellowship continues to face several challenges, including low youth participation, the influence of digital media, the limited availability of contextualized ministry programs, and inadequate leadership succession. This study recommends a youth development model that integrates spirituality, character formation, leadership development, and human capacity development within the life and ministry of the church.
