Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of role play-based instruction through an experiential learning approach in improving elementary students’ English communicative competence within a nonformal learning environment. This study employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) method involving elementary school students participating in English learning activities at Rumah Baca Asma Nadia. Data were collected through observations of the learning process, evaluation of students’ communication abilities, and documentation of learning activities during the implementation of the role play method. The results showed that role play-based learning improved students’ ability to use English actively, including their ability to construct simple sentences, enhance speaking confidence, increase learning motivation, and strengthen engagement during the learning process. The study concludes that role play integrated with experiential learning is an effective approach for children’s English learning because it provides contextual, interactive, and meaningful learning experiences. This research implies that experience-based learning strategies can be developed in both formal and nonformal educational settings to continuously enhance students’ communicative competence.
