Abstract

This study examines Indonesian–English code mixing and morphological hybridization in the Sekolah Sukses YouTube podcast, focusing on structural types, hybrid forms, and communicative functions. It employed a qualitative descriptive design using five purposively selected episodes from the Daniel Mananta Network channel. Data were collected through documentary observation and verbatim transcription. Hoffmann’s framework guided the classification of code-mixing types and communicative categories, while Katamba’s distinction between free and bound morphemes supported the analysis of hybrid forms. The analysis identified 243 instances: 186 intra-sentential, 55 intra-lexical, and two involving a change of pronunciation. The morphological inventory comprised 54 hybrid formations: 39 combining English free morphemes with Indonesian bound elements and 15 combining Indonesian bound elements with English free morphemes. Talking about a particular topic (163 instances) and being emphatic about something (58 instances) were the most frequently assigned communicative categories. These classifications reflect contextual interpretations rather than independently verified speaker intentions. The study documents English insertions and hybrid morphological forms in selected entrepreneurship-oriented interviews. Its conclusions are limited by episode selection, uncertainty in distinguishing borrowing from code mixing, and the discrepancy between the intra-lexical and morphological totals.
