Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of participation in antenatal classes on childbirth preparation among primigravida pregnant women at TPMB Neneng Mahfuzah Banjarmasin. This research employed a quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional design based on processed respondent tabulation data. The population and sample consisted of 20 primigravida pregnant women selected using a total sampling technique. The main variables analyzed were participation in antenatal classes, attendance intensity, and childbirth preparation categories. Data analysis was performed descriptively and supported by contingency tabulation analysis. The results showed that 18 respondents (90.0%) participated in antenatal classes, while 2 respondents (10.0%) did not participate. A total of 17 respondents (85.0%) were categorized as having good childbirth preparation, 1 respondent (5.0%) as moderate, and 2 respondents (10.0%) as poor. Among respondents who participated in antenatal classes, 94.4% were categorized as prepared, while none of the respondents who did not participate achieved the prepared category. Contingency analysis indicated a significant relationship between antenatal class participation and childbirth preparation (Fisher’s exact test p = 0.016), while attendance intensity also showed a positive correlation with readiness level (Spearman’s rho = 0.675; p = 0.001). These findings confirm that antenatal classes contribute to cognitive, emotional, and practical readiness in facing childbirth among primigravida women and should be optimized as a preventive strategy in primary midwifery care.
