Abstract

Breastfeeding is an important public health strategy; however, the postpartum period is also a vulnerable period for stress and anxiety, which may interfere with the lactation process. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal stress and anxiety levels and the smoothness of breast milk production among postpartum women at Koya Community Health Center. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 55 postpartum women. Stress and anxiety levels were categorized as mild, moderate, and severe, while the smoothness of breast milk production was classified as smooth and not smooth. Univariate analysis was used to describe the distribution of respondent characteristics and study variables, while bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test at a 5% significance level. The results showed a significant relationship between stress levels and the smoothness of breast milk production (χ² = 14.862; p = 0.001). Most women with mild stress experienced smooth breast milk production (90.0%), whereas severe stress was more frequently associated with unsmooth breast milk production (75.0%). A significant relationship was also found between anxiety levels and the smoothness of breast milk production (χ² = 17.451; p < 0.001), with higher anxiety associated with a greater proportion of unsmooth breast milk production. These findings highlight the importance of psychological screening and emotional support during postpartum care to improve breastfeeding success.
