Abstract

Adolescents are a vulnerable age group when it comes to the impact of digital technology. High and uncontrolled smartphone usage can trigger dependence and psychological anxiety such as nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia), which is an excessive fear or anxiety when away from a smartphone or disconnected from the internet. To determine the relationship between the intensity of smartphone use and nomophobia among adolescents at SMPN 16 in Pekanbaru. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design with a descriptive-correlational approach. The study population consisted of all 256 seventh- and eighth-grade students at SMPN 16 in Pekanbaru. The sample consisted of 154 respondents selected using the Slovin formula and proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured interview questionnaire to assess smartphone usage intensity and the No Mobile Phone Phobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q). Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test (α = 0.05).The average respondent was 14 years old (50.0%), female (52.6%), and more than half were eighth-graders (61.0%). Less than half reported high smartphone usage intensity (>5 hours/day)—67 students (43.5%)—and 75 students (48.7%) experienced moderate nomophobia. The results of the chi-square test showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant association between smartphone usage intensity and nomophobia. There is a significant association between smartphone usage intensity and nomophobia among adolescents at SMPN 16 in Pekanbaru. The higher the intensity of smartphone usage, the higher the tendency toward nomophobia.
